Organic manure and compost

Feeding your soil as well as your crop.

  1. Use well-decomposed manure or compost only; fresh manure can burn plants and carry disease.
  2. Mix it into the soil before planting.
  3. Build a compost heap with crop residues, leaves and manure and turn it regularly.
  4. Combine organic matter with fertilizer guided by soil tests.
  5. Keep records of what you apply and how the crop responds.

Verify locally: figures, varieties and product choices differ by altitude, season and variety. Confirm with your county agricultural extension officer or KALRO before acting.
